The Department of Human Resource Management & Organisational Studies (HRMOS) is one of the leading international clusters for academic research and teaching in these subjects. We study a massive range of organizations and occupations from scientists and engineers (Lam) to City of London professionals (Ashley), Second World War codebreakers (Grey) and Church of England priests (Conway).

We also draw on and contribute to many theoretical perspectives in these subjects, ranging from feminism (McCarthy) to critical realism (Rees, Smith) and neo-Weberianism (du Gay) and, associated with this, utilise multiple research methods from ethnography (Moore, Karreman), to archival studies (Grey) to large-scale surveys (SenGupta, Tsai).

We research issues such as patterns of employee participation (Gold, SenGupta), the effectiveness of pay and reward structures (SenGupta), technological development and change in organisations (Symon), employee motivation and behaviour (Conway), careers (Ashley, Lam, Simosi), professions (Ashley, Conway, Grey, Karreman, Lam) and the links between HRM and organisational performance (SenGupta, Tsai). We also have a strong focus on sustainability, diversity and ethics (Spence, McCarthy).

Our work is concerned with organisations in many countries including China (Smith, Zheng), Japan (Zheng), India (SenGupta), Korea (Moore), Bulgaria and Rumania (Rees, Gold), Ghana (McCarthy) and Greece (Simosi). It also has multiple impacts on policy and practice, for example social mobility and access to elite professions (Ashley), corporate social responsibility (Spence), the effects of Brexit (Grey), and digital technologies and work-life balance (Symon). 

Our research has been funded by grants from most of the major funding bodies, including the EU, ESRC, EPSRC and Leverhulme Trust, and we also regularly gain funding from smaller bodies, charities and companies.   

Almost all of our staff are affiliated with one or more of the School of Business & Management's research centres - CRIS, CHRONOS and DOS - and some played a foundational role in creating them, especially Spence (CRIS), Grey (CHRONOS) and Symon (DOS).

All our research-active staff teach students at all levels and, additionally, we have staff (Boni, Xhetani, Nyathi, El-Sawad) who specialise in teaching and, within that, have particular specialisms such as de-colonising the curriculum/business school (Nyathi) leadership and change (Xhetani) and employment law (Boni).   Boni is accredited as a Certified Management Business Educator (CMBE) by the Chartered Association of Business Schools and Xhetani is  a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Several members of the Department sit on the editorial and associate boards of leading academic journals in the field: e.g. Organization Studies (Lam, du Gay, Grey, Karreman), Human Relations (Conway, Grey), Organization (Grey, du Gay, Karreman), Work Employment & Society (Rees, SenGupta), Journal of Occupational & Organizational Psychology (Conway), Journal of Organizational Behavior (Conway, Symon). Symon is one of the founding editors of the journal Qualitative Research in Organization and Management.  Departmental members regularly give key note addresses to international conferences, appear in the media, and hold visiting appointments around the globe (e.g. Carnegie-Mellon, Chinese University Hong Kong, Paris-Dauphine) - We also have strong links with Copenhagen Business School with two Departmental members (du Gay, Karreman) holding part-time positions there and others holding or having held visiting positions (Grey, Spence, McCarthy)


The Department is committed to research-informed teaching.  We provide compulsory foundational courses to the first and second years of the Undergraduate Business and Management degree as well as speciaist options on the second and third years.  We also contribute to the MSc International Management and offer a specialist MSc in Human Resource Management.   We also supervise PhD students across all the areas within the Department's disciplines, many of whom go to to become successful academics or go into senior practitioner roles.
