Mr Karl Mason

Personal profile

I trained as a social worker at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 2002.  After graduation, I worked for 5 years in Dublin as a social worker in a statutory child protection and welfare service in both duty and long-term teams before moving to London.  In London I began working in a pre-birth, hospital-based, child safeguarding team in a local authority for two years.  I later worked as a hospital social worker in an A&E department in London for five years, with a focus on hospital discharge, adult social care and safeguarding adults and later managed a social work team and a multi-disciplinary homelessness team in a hospital setting for two years.  I am qualified as a Best Interests Assessor and Practice Educator.

I teach on the MSc Social Work, the PG Dip (Step Up) and the MSc Advanced Practice.  I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  I am an external examiner for social work programmes at Leeds Beckett University.

My research and teaching interests include adult social care policy and practice, particularly in relation to people who are homeless, self-neglect and hospital discharge.  I am a PhD student researching social work responses to homeless adults with care and support needs.
