The Image of the Greek: Western Pilgrims’ Views of Eastern Monks and Monasteries in the Holy Land, c.1200–1500

This article examines the shaping of new attitudes on the part of western pilgrims and visitors to Orthodox monasteries, in the context of changing theological paradigms regarding Orthodoxy; and further proposed reasons for the development of these attitudes relating to the revival of western interest in the origins of monasticism.
