In the Language and Reading Acquisition (LARA) research lab, we are interested in reading and spoken language development in childhood and adolescence. Our research focuses particularly on the role of vocabulary in reading (both word-level reading and reading comprehension), and reciprocally, the role of reading in vocabulary acquisition. Our research adopts a range of methodological approaches including longitudinal and experimental studies to investigate theoretically and practically motivated questions about language acquisition and development. In all of our research, we work closely with teachers and other educational practitioners to design our studies, and ensure that the implications of our findings are explored with educational practice and policy in mind.
