I joined RHUL's Department of Politics and International Relations in September 2016 as Teaching Fellow in Politics and I am now Leverhulme Early Career Fellow (since September 2018). I obtained a PhD at University College London in June 2015 and, before joining Royal Holloway, was Lecturer in Politics at Canterbury Christ Church University.

I research democratic institutions in ethnically divided societies, at European, national and local levels. I am an area expert in Central and Eastern Europe, and I also write on issues of "democratic backsliding" in the region and comparatively. I am the author of The Quality of Divided Democracies. Minority Inclusion, Exclusion and Representation in the New Europe (University of Michigan Press, 2019) and co-editor of Rethinking 'Democratic Backsliding' in Central and Eastern Europe (SI in East European Politics, 2018; Routledge, 2019). 

I am currently working on a second manuscript on Crises, Change and the Governing of Difference: The “Multicultural City” Confronting Austerity, Nativism and Covid-19 (provisional title), funded by the Leverhulme Trust. I am interested in innovative qualitative methods and interdisciplinary collaborations, and as part of this project I have been working with four artists on the multimedia "web-book" www.multiculturalcities.com
