Personal profile

Dr. George Dawei Guo joined the Department in October 2012 as a lecturer in Broadcast Media. He obtained a Ph.D.in Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Westminster in 2012 and a MA in Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2005.

His current research interests mainly concern the past and present of international television industries with a particular focus on the relationship between the US, UK and China. He is currently working on a research project, to investigate the delegation from China Central Television which visited the BBC around 1978: the end of the Cultural Revolution period. Members of this delegation have since become highly influential in the development of TV drama in China, and especially historical dramas. The term ‘quality television’, which derives from this visit, still has currency in China. The research would involve work at the BBC Written Archives as well as interviews with personnel from CCTV and the BBC.

Before he came to England, George had lectured at Beijing’s Communication University of China between 2002 and 2004. As well as teaching at the undergraduate level, he has been leading the module 'Structures of Broadcasting' on the MA International Television Industries (formerly MA International Broadcasting) here in the Media Arts Department since October 2012.

George also has an interest in getting invloved into the process of making TV programmes. For example, he has contributed to Al Jazeera English's weekly media review TV programme Listening Post as a Chinese media oberver. The two programmes where George has appeared so far include China: Soft Power or Hard Sell? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm4-6hfUqJY) and Testing China's Journalistic Limits (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCED4fw4Ap8
