My name is George Dawei Guo (郭大为). Trained as a journalist in China and later as a media sociologist in the UK, I have developed extensive research and teaching interests focusing on the social, cultural, and economic underpinnings of media business in a transnational and transcultural context. Following the completion of my PhD at Westminster, I initially joined the College and took charge of leading the module Structures of Broadcasting on the MA International Broadcasting (currently MA International Media Management) running from October 2012. Over the years, my teaching expertise has progressed from an initial focus on the structures and legality of broadcast media to a broader scope that includes the inspirations and practices of the screen industries. My approach to teaching screen arts and industries is inherently interdisciplinary, rooted in the belief that good creativity arises from a multifaceted understanding of cultures, societies, and histories. I have been responsible for teaching at Foundation Year, UG, and PGT levels, with a primary focus on PGT.
My research revolves around international communication, with a specific focus on investigating the cultural and economic implications of transnational media flows. I have dedicated my research efforts to examining the history and present of transnational audio-visual flows between Anglo-American countries and the East Asian region. My current research methodology is derived from the anthropology of media, addressing specific issues, such as visual cultures, techno-nationalism, and communication and mobility.
Currently, I hold the position of Course Director for the MA International Media Management (https://cutt.ly/TeBVWaJ), which is hosted by the Media Arts Department. In addition to teaching at the postgraduate level, I also lead or contribute lectures to undergraduate modules, such as Film, Television, and Digital Histories (Year One), as well as the Creative Industries (Year Two). I am delighted to offer supervision for PhD projects.
I am also currently serving as the Co-Director of Internationalisation at the School of Performing and Digital Arts.
I have actively participated in various professional and consultancy activities while maintaining my commitment to Royal Holloway. Some of these activities include reviewing submissions for academic journals, such as Television and New Media. Additionally, I have provided consultancy services in the realm of UK-China TV co-productions. These experiences have greatly enriched my professional background and have provided me with valuable insights into the industry.
