David Voneshen

I work at both Royal Holloway and the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source in Didcot, Oxfordshire. At ISIS I am responsible for the MERLIN spectrometer, which specializes in measurements of magnetic and lattice excitations in a wide range of systems. These excitations tell us about the couplings between atoms or spins within materials, allowing us to understand their properties.

My research is focused on materials for energy applications, principally thermoelectrics that can be used to turn waste heat back into useful power. The potential usefulness of a thermoelectric is strongly coupled to its lattice thermal conductivity of which neutrons are an ideal probe. I regularly perform experiments both at ISIS and at the European neutron source, the Insitut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France.
