Research and impact

Professor Bradley has designed and developed a range of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) for long-term health conditions, including diabetes, chronic kidney disease, eye conditions, HIV and others. These questionnaires include measures of well-being, quality of life, treatment satisfaction and symptoms. The quality of life and treatment satisfaction questionnaires are tailored to be suitable for specific long-term conditions. For example, the quality of life measure for diabetes asks about the impact of diabetes on dietary freedom as well as other aspects of life known to be commonly impacted by diabetes and important for the quality of life of many individuals. A further major advantage of Professor Bradley’s quality of life measures is that they share a common template, allowing for comparison of the impact of different conditions on quality of life using a common scoring metric.

Professor Bradley’s research has had wide implications outside of academia. Her PROMs have been linguistically validated in over 120 languages for use worldwide and have helped pharmaceutical companies to assess treatment success in terms of quality of life as well as quality of health and consider the wellbeing and treatment satisfaction of a range of patient populations.

Current work includes dissemination of the development and use of measures for people with abdominal aortic aneurysms, Parkinson’s disease and dementia, use of recent HIV measures in a national cohort study, use of measures in studies evaluating the outcomes of kidney and kidney + pancreas transplantation, and the design and development of a new quality of life measure for people with cancer.
