Abstract
The causes of terrorism have long been a source of critical concern to policy-makers and of intense interest for researchers. Understanding the causes opens avenues to preventing the emergence of future conflicts and of safely diverting individuals from pathways towards extremist violence. It also offers the potential to mitigate the severity of ongoing conflicts and of possibly facilitating a resolution to violence. The focus of this chapter is to explore some of the key issues in understanding the causes of terrorism.
