Abstract
For crimes committed by unknown actors, what factors are more likely to lead to the arrest of suspects? What is it that differentiates cases which are solved from those which are not? In most European and North American countries the ability of law enforcement to make arrests in crimes has generally been declining since the 1960s (and this despite advances in science and technology). Yet research into the factors affecting whether investigations lead to arrests or not is extremely thin on the ground.
