Abstract
Recent years have witnessed a growing recognition of the positive use of sport and physical activity in both prison and community settings as a tool for engagement and as a foundation for rehabilitative work. Consequently, the integration of sport and physical activity programmes within global and national policies for prisoner management has become commonplace. This chapter takes a critical look at the history and development of policy and practice concerning sport and physical activity in youth and adult prisons, highlighting some of the most significant developments to date, and identifying the barriers and opportunities for future development.
