Abstract
Inside the UDA represents a rare addition to the literature on both the Troubles and on terrorists. For those who seek a realistic insight into the minds and motivations of terrorists this is a simply excellent volume. The loyalist terror campaigns have traditionally attracted far less empathetic appraisal than those of their republican counterparts in the IRA. More often, they have been swiftly dismissed as sectarian thugs and petty gangsters. Inside the UDA provides an important counter-balance to such stereotypes and provides too a welcome and uncommon avenue for understanding why individuals become and remain involved in campaigns of terrorism.
