Abstract
Data skills are essential for the research community to make the most of the digital revolution. The design and delivery of teaching in this area can be daunting for individuals who have not delivered such courses. With this in mind, this paper provides a set of simple, actionable recommendations to carry out teaching in this area. In particular we note that there are ample examples of curricula and materials to make use of, that iterative improvement is the best strategy, that technical challenges should be prepared for and that one should consider the longer term perspectives on these activities.
