Abstract

This book examines the business enterprises, trading networks, and legal interactions of middle-class women in the Eighteenth and early Nineteenth Centuries. It argues that despite financial barriers, legal disabilities and the impact of domestic ideology, the concept of separate spheres and narratives of the decline of female enterprise have significantly underestimated the range and types of business practice that women engaged in.
