We the Mother

Abstract

We the Mother reimagines ideas of domestic violence and the ordinary patterns of abuse absorbed into motherhood, especially. The book interrogates the particular, primal assault on motherhood within a courtroom that demolishes and erodes the sanctity of being a mother. My novel explores the life of an abused woman unable to defend herself when under this severe threat. The courtroom’s offer of a screen for women testifying against their abuser is a system that encourages secrecy, silence and shame for the victim, instead of creating new space for these vital stories.
