Abstract
On the corner of Cambridge Heath Road and Andrews Road in Hackney is a railroad bridge. Crossing both Regent’s Canal and Andrews Road, the bridge creates a kind of shelter: a place both exposed and enclosed; light and dark; outside and inside. To move through this space is to move between. In this way, it creates a kind of passage: a journey through which people move swiftly – across a moment, through stillness – toward the next place to be. A poem, devised in relation to this site, is printed and mounted onto a series of wooden blocks, then installed on the wall under the bridge. Written as a specific address to a person who, for a short time, made this place his home, the lines are also read by a general audience of passers-by. The work thus opens up a dialogue with an addressee, both singular and plural.
