Abstract

The sequence began life as a series of titles taken from an exhibition of work by Ewald Matare in Bad Homburg. Ewald had produced a series of variations on a simple motif often reducing cows to geometrical shapes. The sequence is what Eric Mottram called a 'locatory action', but with affiliations to procedural poetry and to what Adrian Clarke has called 'London neo-formalism'. It is an exploration of a non-urban poetics through attention to pre-historic land-use and its shaping of landscape, to the prehistoric origins of art-making, to the basic elements of art practice, and through a deliberate openness to all the senses.
