Abstract

Several documents demonstrate Hans Wahl’s active anti-Semitism as well as his ties to the Nazi regime. Here his role as vice-president of the Goethe Society in Weimar was of utmost importance. Wahl attempted to protect the Society from harsh co-optation, cultivating contacts with Joseph Goebbels, whom he seems to have convinced of the ‘global role’ of the Society. At the same time, Wahl subordinated the Society’s new journal to Nazi ideology and sought to ward off attempts at control by the office of Alfred Rosenberg by playing up to Rosenberg, particularly by active participation in the party-line Nordic Society.
