Abstract

The two-day Conference explored the reception of Thomas Aquinas (1225-74) in Byzantium. Twenty scholars from Britain, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and USA gave papers on various aspects of Thomistic thought in the Greek East and the Latin West. The first day of the conference was devoted to Aquinas’ Philosophy and Theology, while on the second day scholars presented new findings of their research as part of the ongoing international research project Thomas de Aquino Byzantinus, which aims at producing critical editions of unpublished or poorly published Greek translations of, and commentaries on, Aquinas’ works by Byzantine scholars. The project is co-hosted by the University of Patras and the Hellenic Institute, and is currently funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation through the “Artos Zois” Foundation. The Conference was held in the new National Library of Greece, Books Tower, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Athens between 15–16 December 2017. Co-organised by the National Library of Greece, the University of Patras and the Hellenic Institute the conference was attended by 70 students, scholars, and members of the public. The volume with the Proceedings of the Conference to be published by the “Artos Zois” Foundation is currently being co-edited by Professor John A. Demetracopoulos and Dr Charalambos Dendrinos.
