Abstract

The Waiting Room is a smartphone short and VR project which tells the story of my breast cancer (as patient and film-maker) from diagnosis through treatment to recovery. The Waiting Room explores chronic illness from a patient’s POV.

In 2017, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. As part of this project, I gained access to my tumour samples at Kings College Hospital. Looking though the microscope at my own cancer cells ultimately led me to reflect on what we can and what we can’t control when our bodies fail us. The Waiting Room will challenge the language of illness and the cultural myths that surround this disease.

The Waiting Room begins with a personal journey but as cancer affects one in two of us over the course of a lifetime, it also tells a very universal story. Over the last year I’ve been working closely with clinicians at Guys and Kings College Hospital to explore how The Waiting Room could also be used as an interactive resource for both patients and health care professionals, which could ultimately lead to more patient focused approaches to cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Waiting Room smartphone short was recently commissioned by The Guardian and will be published on their website in early 2019.
