Abstract

This edited collection of essays traces the reception of the work of Joseph Conrad in mainland Europe from the 1890s to the present day. The essays (and supporting time-line and bibliography) engage with translations, critical reception, academic reception, theatrical adaptations and some of the impact on other writers in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Spain and Ukraine - with particularly substantial sections on the French, German, Italian and Spanish reception. There i attention throughout to the cultural and political context in which the work is received and how the work is used in different cultures.
