We show how the positive energy spectrum of an atom or molecule in an arbitrary strength magnetic field can be obtained in a general way and we illustrate the approach by calculating the photoionization spectrum for both hydrogen and lithium atoms in (a) a high magnetic field of 470 Tesla and (b) a laboratory strength field of 6.1 T. The theory combines quantum-defect theory, R-matrix propagation and two-dimensional frame transformations. Much of the observed experimental resonance structure in the continuum can be understood in terms of complex perturbed Rydberg series.
