Abstract

A 92-page manuscript in the Paris Opéra library, not hitherto reported, summarises managerial decisions between 1749 and 1757. The dossiers it refers to are no longer extant; the Opéra had been directed from an office in the City Hall. It reveals extra-generous payments made to Rameau, to repair earlier rifts, but less generous treatment for Rousseau. The latter's account of his rift with the Opéra in 'Les Confessions' is shown to be ambiguous, but financially accurate. Other areas of report include money for training young musicians, the hiring of managers, and charitable payments to the former director, Tréfontaine.
