The Nineteenth Century: France

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This is a commissioned survey designed by Oxford for the general reader: it covers opera and opéra-comique created in France between 1789 and 1889. It makes much use of contemporary letters and documents to allow the reader into the contexts of production and the tastes of the age. By way of anchoring value-judgements, the essay also sporadically pursues an argument concerning the development of expressive techniques related to 'outward' depictions (e.g. local colour) that should ideally match up with music expressing the 'inner' demands of characters depicted.
