Abstract

Superconducting epitaxial Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl-2212) thin films are reproducibly synthesised on single-crystal LaAlO3 substrates by an ex-situ process using prefilms deposited by laser ablation and treating with Tl2O(g) at 730-875 degrees C under quasi-equilibrium conditions. The influence of the composition of the Tl2O source on film properties is investigated, the best films being produced using Tl-2212 with a 2% excess of Tl2O3. Films prepared at optimum conditions with respect to Tl2O source, annealing temperature and precursor target composition are optically smooth, c-axis oriented and epitaxial, containing low levels of impurity phases. T-c's range between 105 and 108K with Delta T-c
