Abstract

This book examines the political history of the fall of the Roman Republic and the birth of Empire from the death of Caesar to the accession of Tiberius ( 44 BCE - 14 CE). It argues that this was a period of revolution, when an old order was swept away and replaced by a new political system. It gives place to the violence of the revolution and examines the material underpinnings of the new imperial regime.
