“Published but not printed”: John Toland and the circulation of manuscripts c.1700-1722.

Abstract

The radical writer John Toland had a number of his works printed but not published, instead distributing them individually to members of his circle of sympathisers and patrons. By this means he avoided official censorship. The range of his contacts shows that he was active in influential political and legal circles.
