Abstract

In-depth study of history of operas normally omitted from opera books, surveys, anthologies, etc.: works with spoken dialogue. Such Dramatic operas evolved from seventeenth-century theatre forms using significant musical participation, through to the eighteenth-century seasonal, independent theatres operating (when permitted) during the period of the Paris Fairs. One research aim of the book is to join up knowledge connected with musical and dramatic forms and conventions current in the first half of the century with various equivalent forms which were used after the introduction of newer styles of music from Italy from 1753.
