Polar Oceans: Sovereignty and the contestation of territorial and resource rights

Klaus-John Dodds, Alan Hemmings

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The chapter explores the legal, political and environmental challenges facing the Arctic and Southern Oceans. While mindful of the distinctive governance and geophysical qualities of each geographical region, we focus on IUU fishing, marine protected areas, continental shelf delimitation and strategic access as something which has preoccupied coastal, claimant and extraterritorial states alike. We conclude on a pessimistic note warning of future tension over the management of living and non-living resources in both oceans.
