Abstract

This pilot research draws on 16 qualitative interviews with nurses, midwives and care assistants in a district general hospital. We investigated key issues for culturally diverse staff caring for a less diverse patient population in the south east of England. Our findings suggest that collaborative leadership, staff empowerment and a patient- centred organisational culture support compassionate care. Whereas previous research suggests that cultural diversity may result in barriers to compassionate care, we identify staff shortages, overreliance on agency staff and bureaucratic approaches to leadership and management as greater detriments to compassionate care. The study provides pointers for further research.
