Abstract
This study uses recent historical scholarship to redate the dialogue-poem from the 1190s to 1203-4. The situation of the Angoumois which it evokes belongs to the broader picture of the struggle between the kings of England and France for the Plantagenet’s continental possessions and it is argued that this conflict is also referred to in a hitherto unrecognised reference in Gaucelm Faidit’s crusading song, ‘Ara nos sia guitz’.
