Abstract

Focusing particularly on South Asia and Turkey, but also making reference to the rest of the Islamic world, this article demonstrates how at a time of Western dominance, and the co-option of elites to Western culture and power, this article demonstrates how ulama and Sufis have played a key role in rebuilding Islamic societies from below. A key factor in the focus was the piety of individual Muslims and their willingness to donate financially to make this process happen.
