Abstract

Demonstrates how early actresses shaped the development of English drama by providing new bodies, new voices, and new verisimilitude to performance. Case studies of Nell Gwyn, Anne Oldfield and Susannah Cibber map onto literary histories of Restoration comedy, comedies of (fine) manners, and she-tragedy.
