Abstract

When artworks contain letters or entire words, the relationship between the linguistic and visual signs is rarely one of straightforward equivalence. This book examines the complex interactions of word and image in a range of works by Picasso, Braque, Severini, Schwitters, Miró, Magritte, Ruscha and Twombly.
