Abstract

Identifies and defines crucial aspects of musical forms and conventions in the first stages of the development of opéra-comique following the influence of Italian intermezzi and comic operas in 1752-54. In particular, the concept and nature of an 'ariette' are shown to be wholly redefined at this juncture, now including the possibility of two or more voices and also stage action. The relation of sonata form to the 'dialogue duet' in Rousseau's formulation is explained; also the exploration of extended non-symmetrical forms by Gossec and others. Finally the links between Romance form and narrative texts are outlines.
