Between 1905 and 1914, Conrad made three significant cross-border journeys with his family. This essay describes these journeys and discusses the work that was produced during or after them: the essay 'Autocracy and War'; the novel The Secret Agent; and the essay 'Poland Revisited'. It considers Conrad's advocation of a borderless Europe as a defence against competing nationalisms and his confrontation with his father's life of sacrifice for Polish nationalhood.
