Abstract

Commissioned introduction to the book, serving to raise the questions appropriate to studying music during this particular historical phase. It also sets the scene regarding special phenomena in musical life, including the festival music witnessed by the poet Wordsworth, and described in 'The Prelude'. The four parts of the book are introduced: 'Elements of Continuity'; 'Revolutionary Opera'; 'Music and the New Politics'; and 'Napoleon and After'.
