Abstract

This paper presents a first approach to the design of emergent behaviors and interfaces in the context of interactive arts. The main conceptual issues involved are presented, along with the metadesign challenge implied in designing something that, by definition, cannot be designed per se. Key examples are discussed and used as examples of successful attempts to gene- rate emergence in interactive art. Whilst the issue remains largely unsolved, these examples and the proposed theoretical framework are presented as
a starting point towards the design of interactivity that can be regarded as being emergent.
