Abstract

The composite materials sector is characterized by a flexible and innovative approach to forming shapes, adapting processes and modifying materials. In the composite materials sector, which might be considered as a comparatively young developing industry, there is not a standard manufacturing process, nor are there standardized materials with defined or proscribed properties for companies to select. Hence, the configuration of the composites materials supply chain represents a major challenge. This paper introduces product manufacturing, supplier and technology selection as important elements that affect the configuration of the composite materials supply chain. A pilot study was used to identify such elements in two organizations in the UK composites sector. The findings show the preponderance of supplier selection together with the growing importance of distribution optimization and lean principles. Future opportunities are identified.
