Abstract
High seed quality is the capacity for synchronous germination and rapid establishment of vigorous, uniform seedlings even under sub-optimal conditions or stress. It is a cornerstone for yield potential of agricultural and horticultural crops. Seed quality is a complex trait determined by the interaction between multiple genetic factors, environmental and developmental cues, and by physiological seed enhancement technologies. Seed priming enhances seed quality by providing high germination vigour to protect the most vulnerable seedling stage against extreme and erratic weather conditions (climate change). Pre-harvest sprouting is a serious problem in cereals such as bread wheat which impacts negatively on bread-making quality. Our research is to reveal the underpinning mechanisms and to develop tools to further improve the seed quality and technology used for various crops. Seeds are the delivery systems of genetic and technological advancement and innovation for improving primary crop production and for managing environmental change. The science, engineering and economics of agri-technologies and ecosystem services converge at the seed (food security and sustainability).
