Abstract

Part of the Gorchakov’s Wish series of works, ‘Immolation Triptych – video’ engages with the final three scenes of Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Nostalghia (1983) through a tri-partite performance designed specifically for its documentation through video. The work translates and transforms each of these three scenes through word, image, object and action as well as through the spatial design and construction of each in-studio shot. The work, which was performed and filmed a the Centre for Creative Collaboration in London, reconfigures Tarkovsky’s ‘original’ Nostalghia so that it embodies a reflective state of nostalgia. In doing so, we expose the creative as well as the critical potential of Tarkovksy’s film image for contemporary video and site-related art/poetic practice.
