Abstract

Broadcast January - February 2017, Hospital is an acclaimed six part series for BBC which drew a high level of press attention, including front page and letters page coverage; it was featured on TV network news and Newsnight programmes and named “Magnificent” (Guardian) “Brilliant and brave” (The New Statesman) and “Extraordinary” (The Times). It focuses on behind-the-scenes decision-making and resource allocation within a London NHS hospital trust during a time of crisis in winter 2016, and due to its ‘unprecedented impact on audiences’ has been the subject of a Royal Television Society production focus event. The series exemplifies ideas I explore in theoretical work (Littleboy, 2013) about shifts in the execution of authorship within television documentary at this time of increasing fragmentation and competition within the media landscape. Nominated for a Grierson award, Best Documentary Series.
