Abstract

An examination of the many different kinds of ancient evidence that we must use to reconstruct attitudes towards gender in ancient Greek and Roman culture, and of the problems and limitations involved in their use. It also discusses the changing range of modern interpretations of and attitudes towards gender in classical culture. The intended readers range from professional scholars to postgraduate/undergraduate students and school/college teachers, who are researching classical culture or more generally the history of gender in society.
