Abstract
The original production of Gateway to Heaven was performed by Clare's theatre company, Artemis, in 2006, directed by Kate Crutchley. Following the premiere at Ovalhouse, London, the play toured twice to theatres around England.
The play’s title comes from two historic venues. The Gateways club was one of the first lesbian bars in London and featured in the film The Killing of Sister George, while Heaven is a gay men’s nightclub that opened in 1979 and is still going strong.
The play is based on interviews with people who span the gamut of social and ethnic backgrounds. Whilst some of them were main players in early lesbian and gay politics in the UK, others were simply involved in their own personal battles against social and legal forms of prejudice.
