Abstract

GARGANTUA presents a sequence of poems as corrupted reference guide, overpopulated by scraps of varied and often incongruous systems of knowledge, and dispersed through the remains of grotesque body parts from Rabelais' novels.

These poems present an intensely disorganised involvement with the methods of human knowledge, where the decomposition of reference is enacted through shifting patterns of language as a defeated encyclopedic effort, generative of indeterminacy, invention and transformation. GARGANTUA presents the constant metamorphosis of forms and qualities through its trashing of structure, in a play of ambivalent language which refers expansively, encompassing nothing.
