Abstract

This article provides an overview of the Farangi Mahall family who were leaders in Islamic learning in South Asia from the C17th to the C20th. It sets out their key leadership in the area of ma<qulat scholarship and their role in fostering its development in India in C18th Awadh. It also sets out their development of the Dars-i Nizamiyya madrasa curriculum which has been used in South Asia down to the present. Finally the article deals with the spread of the Farangi Mahallis throughout South Asia from the mid-C18th and their substantial involvement in the politics of Muslim separatism in the C20th.
