Duncan Grant's 'Abstract Kinetic Collage Painting, with Sound' (1914)

Research output: Other contribution

Abstract

The project consists of an introductory essay by Chris Townsend, outlining the making of the artwork, three longer essays, one by Christopher Reed (Penn. State) on the relationship of the work to domestic designs by Grant and Vanessa Bell for the Omega Workshop, one by Townsend on the relationship between Grant's artwork and Virginia Woolf's short story 'Kew Gardens', (1919) and one by Rhys Davies (Royal Holloway) on the possibilities for using sound in kinetic artwork such as this in the 1910s. There is a short biographical memoir by Simon Watney recounting the rediscovery of the work at Charleston in 1969. The artwork will be presented in digital format and will be available for users to animate at different speeds, with a variety of period soundtracks.
