Digital Selves: How Digital communication tools are reshaping social interaction

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Over a billion text messages are sent each week in the UK alone. With vastly increased digital memory storage, our digital archives are transforming. What do these archives tell us about how digital data will be remembered or forgotten in the future?

I will reflect upon Sophie Calle's 2007 art work, Take Care of Yourself, a project inspired by a break up email she received from an ex partner. I will interview Filmmaker Lernert Engelberts, about his online film project I love Alaska, inspired by an archive of 650,000 personal AOL search queries, accidentally published online.
What do these archives of the self tell us about how social interaction and digital identity have transformed over the last decade?
