Abstract

The chapter explores the indigenous roots of Sheppard's early poetry . It shows the importance of poets such as Lee Harwood, Roy Fisher, Bob Cobbing and Allen Fisher, in particular, to the development of Sheppard's poetry and poetics through the 1980s. The chapter concludes with the 1993 publication of Transit Depots / Empty Diaries with its alternation of texts by Sheppard and John Seed. This publication marked a convergence of two English poetry traditions - and another turning point in Sheppard's poetry and poetics.
